Genepharm Opened its Second R&D
Center in Taiwan
Genepharm, specializing
in the development and commercialization of preventive and curative therapeutics
for skin-related problems, established its Taiwan subsidiary, Genepharm
Biotechnology Cooperation (GBC), close to a year ago. The company uses technology-led business model
with unique marketing strategies which allows it to grow significantly in the
short period of time. Other than setting up the market and sales channels at Taiwan for launching the skin treatment
products, Dermesis, Genepharm expects to launch the products to the greater Asia in the near future.
On January 31, 2008, Genepharm also opened
a research and development facility at Taiwan Nankang
Biotech Incubation
Center. The first R&D
center exists in its headquarter located at Sunnyvale, California.
The center will focus on improving the formulations of existing topical drugs
using two Genepharm’s patented technology, Calcium-T and Aero-Foli.
The Calcium-T technology is a proprietary mineral complex that can
effectively deliver the required amount of calcium and related ions into the
epidermis for optimal skin barrier regeneration and homeostasis. The intended
use is to be applied for post-photothermolysis treatment and adjunctive therapy
of skin diseases. The Aero-Foli technology is a unique technology
to effectively deliver the designated active compounds into follicular pathway
and ensure the efficient transport of drugs after application on skin surface. This
technology is applied in hair-related therapy and follicular drug delivery. The
implementation of these two technologies on drug development will allow
Genepharm to create opportunities for the new applications of topical drugs and
over-the-counter (OTC) products of adjuvant skin therapy.
Director of
Industrial Development Bureau Ministry of Economic Affairs, Mr. Gou Zhen Lee,
attended the opening ceremony of the R&D
Center. He said that the Taiwan
government completely supports the development of biotechnology. The government even offers several tax
benefits and incentives, emphasizes on patent protection law, and along with
sufficient skillful workers to encourage the research and development through
innovative processes. By taking advantage on these important elements favorable
to the Taiwan
biotechnology industry, Genepharm confidently focuses on the development of new
topical drug to achieve tremendous growth potentials in the foreseeable future.
